Review:
Annie Whitman (the girl known as 'easy Annie' throughout Sweet Valley High) desperately wants to make it on the cheerleading squad. She's doing everything right: she's bringing her grades up with the help of Elizabeth's tutoring and she's practicing like crazy on her cheering and flips.
However, despite that fact that Annie is exceptional, Jessica has bought into the rumors and is determined not to ever let Annie become part of the squad. So after making it through three tryouts and earning a majority of votes during the final tryout, Jessica manipulates the cheerleading squad by threatening to quit the team if they vote Annie in. So, Annie gets cut (she never stood a chance in the first place).
In the meantime Elizabeth is working hard at fixing Jessica's schemes but in the end it seems she just can't change Jessica's mind this time.
Ricky Capaldo (manager of the cheerleading squad) is the one who breaks the news to Annie that Jessica black-balled her, for which she becomes increasingly upset, runs away, and skips school for several days. Finally Ricky becomes concerned enough to go to her apartment to check on her, only to find she's passed out on the bathroom floor from an overdose (attempted suicide) and he rushes to get her to the hospital.
Soon after, Jessica and Elizabeth join Ricky and Annies neglectful, man-hunting mother at the ER in hopes that Annie will pull through. Ultimately, Jessica talks Annie out of her self-induced coma by promising to allow her to become part of the cheerleading squad, she miraculously wakes up, Ricky professes his love to her, Annie's mom says shes broken up with her latest boyfriend and the rest is history!
From 'the real' eyes and ears of Sweet Valley High:
Ok, let's begin with Annie, since that's what this whole story is about. With a man-eating mother like hers, who could blame Annie for turning out to be a boy-chasing floosy? And you want to know something else, Annie admitted many times to Elizabeth that she actually did have lots of boyfriends, one time she even had two dates with two different boys on the same night! So, don't go saying that the 'Easy Annie' idea was rumors...they were based on fact!
Furthermore, everyone knows that Jessica is the exact same way. She wasn't worried about her reputation being at stake if Annie joined the team. Nope. Jessica was worried about competition. She didn't want to lose any of her male admirers to Annie, and besides, Annie is way prettier and a way better cheerleader anyway. Don't you just hate it when Jessica tries to camoflauge nobility in her decepting ways? Sorry, but most of the student body with higher IQ's than 70 can see right past her!
And please, Liz, we're still waiting on you to grow some guts and quit being such a pushover!
On the final note, who ever would have thought poor Annie was desperate enough to be a cheerleader that she'd kill herself? She knew exactly what she was doing and Jessica bought right into it....talk about two peas in a pod!
